Rhea Knives are hand forged in the manner of
old world craftsmanship. I use several steels in the blade
construction. I make hunting knives primarily, but also enjoy making
Bowie knives.
This knife
is the # 2 knife for the Fisk Micro Show. This Bowie is a
stout but light in the hand knife that is in the Southwest
style. It's made very similar to the "Hombre" in blade
shape and handling, but with a few different details. The
construction is through tang, where I attach the butt cap to the
tang with a threaded screw, so its very strong and secure with
no need for additional pins. I engraved the butt cap in a
very "folkart" manner, but it has the desired effect of making
the knife look more antiqued. I also finished the whole
knife in a satin texture for the same reason.
The balance point is just in front of the guard.
The butt cap started off 1/4 inch thick to give me the depth I
needed, but to keep it from being too heavy, I milled out some
of the material on the underside of the cap. This really
helped the balance.
The blade is 5/16" at the ricasso and has a good distal
taper.
