Journeyman Bladesmith Rating
I tested for the rating of Journeyman
Bladesmith in June of 2005. You may be familiar with the
process, but for those who are not, I will briefly outline it.
First, I had to make a performance knife with which I
am required to cut a 1 inch free hanging rope, chop a 2X4 completely
in two, twice and then bend 90 degrees with out breaking. I have a
few pictures of my JS testing process that you might be interested in
seeing.
The second phase of the JS test is to submit 5 test
knives before a jury of Master Bladesmiths at the Atlanta Blade Show.
The judges would be looking for good quality workmanship in the fit
and finish of these knives. They are also looking for the
maker's range in that he can make a variety of types of knives with a
variety of handle construction.
I was very happy to pass this test and become a
Journeyman Bladesmith in The American Bladesmith Society. I
look forward to learning more of the process that will take me closer
to the next level of Mastersmith. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all who assisted and encouraged me to get to
this point in my knife making career.
